Air Quotes
While the term “Air Quotes” often is used to describe something that is being said ironically or sarcastically, at ArtWorking the term is used colloquially to simply indicate that what is being said is code for something else. In this way, the word being said becomes something closer to a symbol or an icon that references a concept or an idea that is known only to those that understand the code.
Within the body of work represented in this exhibition there are many gestures, marks and imagery that are representations of experiences and identities that can only be understood by leaning in and becoming closer to the artists themselves. In this way, we hope that you will accept the challenge to also lean in; to get to know us as artists, individuals and people; to crack each others codes and to read when is hidden within the air quotes.
